Alternative futures methods: FMAW zines

The Futures Methods from Around the World (FMAW) project explores locally rooted knowledge systems and ways of thinking and acting from diverse communities worldwide. Through research, dialogue and experimentation, the work creates space to surface alternative perspectives and expand how we imagine futures.

As part of this work, the team developed a collection of zines exploring five thematic clusters.

Time

Exploring different understandings of time drawn from diverse communities and knowledge systems. The zine invites reflection on temporalities rooted in place, relationships, ecological cycles and intergenerational connections, alongside provocations for how we might imagine time differently. Download the zine.

Trust

Exploring how trust is understood and expressed across cultures and communities. Through examples spanning relationships with people, nature, belief systems and collective action, it invites reflection on solidarity, mutualism and alternative foundations for trust. Download the zine.

Stewardship

Exploring alternative approaches to stewardship, care and responsibility across communities. The zine surfaces examples of shared resource management, reciprocity and relational approaches to land, ecosystems and future generations. Download the zine.

Agency

Exploring agency through collective action, relational leadership and community self-organisation. It brings together perspectives that challenge individualised understandings of agency and invite reflection on how communities act together. Download the zine.

Infrastructure

Exploring infrastructure beyond the physical, through social systems, ecological knowledge and practices of care. It invites reflection on the infrastructures that sustain collective wellbeing, resilience and interdependence. Download the zine.
