Erurera Tarena

Biography

Eruera leads an indigenous social innovation lab and futures academy, Tokona te Raki: Māori Future Maker, in New Zealand’s South Island.

Tribal Affiliations: Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui

With a PhD in indigenous organisation design and a strong background in Māori culture, language and
community development, he weaves global and indigenous knowledge to create new, novel and cultural
approaches to innovation and future making.

His work supports communities, organisations and sectors to come together, unweave old ways of
knowing and doing holding the status quo in place before designing and reweaving new patterns to
create change. He has led a range of indigenous initiatives unweaving broken systems, imagining new
horizons, driving systemic change and empowering indigenous youth to lead long-term transformation.
He is a passionate advocate for indigenous peoples reclaiming the ability to determine their own future
and unlocking the potential of ancestral knowledge to tackle complex challenges.
