Nancy Chepkoech Muigei

Nancy Chepkoech Muigei is a Strategic Foresight Specialist and Governance Expert with experience in the areas of Anti-Corruption, Elections, and Democratic Resilience. Nancy has worked with the International Peace Training and Support Centre in Nairobi, conducting research on security sector reforms in Somalia and training peace support operations officers for deployment under the Kenya Defence Forces (Ministry of Defence). Her research and policy development interests include democratic governance, civil society, youth, transitional justice, peace, and security. She has conducted capacity trainings and published widely on these subjects.

As a gender expert, she has worked with Women in Law and Development Africa, implementing the Sexual Offences Act in Kenya, and the Institute of Economic Affairs in the drafting of Kenya’s first Youth Fact Book, which included the Kenya Youth Scenarios. Nancy is also specialized in election monitoring and, in particular, understanding media frames, representation, and political risk analysis. In that regard, she worked as a Media Monitor and Media Assistant to the Expert for the European Union Observations Missions to Kenya in 2007 and 2013. In the 2017 and 2022 Elections, she was an observer in the Presidential Tallying Centre. 

Nancy has previously worked in The Hague for Oxfam Novib, Kenya National Assembly,  9th Parliament and the Green Belt Movement working with Africa’s first Woman Nobel Peace Prize Prof. Wangari Maathai. Nancy has consulted for the African Union -Africa Governance Architecture (AU-AGA), Africa Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC), The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the African Court on Human and People’s Rights. Nancy has served as a co-chair of the Civil Society and Media working group, Co-Chair of the Anti-Corruption and Donor Working Group alongside Germany. Her most impactful achievements have been influencing Kenya to adopt civil society engagement in the UNCAC process at the Conference of State Parties, influencing on UNGA resolution on abolition of death penalty, Human Right Council UPR process and many other resolutions and UN votes.

She holds a Masters in Development Studies with a specialization in Conflict, Reconstruction, and Human Security from the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Education English and Literature (Hons) from Kenyatta University Kenya, where she developed an anthology of poetry focusing on violence and the failed Post-Colonial State in Africa. Nancy is a recipient of various awards such as the NORAD scholarship at the University of Oslo (2009) and the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (Nuffic) (2011-2012). In 2015, Nancy was selected as one of 25 Young African Leaders in the inaugural Building Bridges Leading in Public Life Programme of the University of Cape Town, Graduate School of Development and Policy Practice. In 2016, she was part of the annual residential school on governance and development that is part of the Governance for Development in Africa programme run by the School of Oriental African Studies of the University of London in collaboration with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

Nancy’s mission is to foster long-term thinking and mitigate risks for current and future generations. She is part of the NGFP Network in Africa, a Global Coordinator of the Collaborative Futures Community in Kenya, Founder of Nawiri Foresight, Co-founder Women who Walk and Run in Kenya, a group of over 6k women on Facebook. Her commitment to Strategic Foresight drives contributions in navigating global challenges and shaping a better future.

Nancy currently sits in the board of International Institute of Legislative Affairs in Kenya, Mentor with Tony Elumelu and Emerging Leaders Foundation (ELF). Last year she was among the Speakers at the LSE Africa Summit, She also gave an inaugural lecture at the UCT Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance alongside Former Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel among other African Leaders.
