Jessica Bland is a Principal at the School of International Futures. She specialises in emerging technologies policy and foresight. Jessica works with governments and NGOs, using foresight tools to support public sector policy, investment and international agreements. Alongside this consultancy, Jessica recently completed a year long study on human rights and technology ethics with Professor Jodi Haplern at UC Berkeley.
Jessica was Head of Research and Foresight at the Dubai Future Foundation, a government initiative to stimulate responsible innovation in the MENA region until September 2019. Before that, she spent four years developing a futures team at the think tank Nesta. She also worked at the Royal Society (the UK’s national academy of science), where she led projects on data science, synthetic biology, space and infrastructure policy.
She has a particular interest in the role of the media and the public in foresight, running successful events series in London and Dubai as well as writing for the Guardian and the Economist. She has a graduate degree in Science Communication from Imperial College London and a Masters in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Oxford.
